Jonathan Toews progressing

CHICAGO -- Though Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is progressing, he won't travel with the team as it embarks on a three-game road trip, coach Joel Quenneville announced Thursday.

"He's getting the proper attention," Quenneville said after practice at United Center. "He's working with our trainers. He's doing his routine. He's progressing."

Toews has missed the past five games with what the team is calling an upper-body injury. The Blackhawks have gone 2-3 without him.

Quenneville left open the possibility Toews could join the team as it travels to Ottawa, Detroit and St. Louis the next six days.

Injured defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson is closer to returning to the lineup after practicing again Thursday. He's missed 10 of 11 games because of a head injury.

"Hjalmarsson felt really good today, so he's going to come on the trip," Quenneville said.

Ray Emery starts in net Friday against the Senators. He relieved Corey Crawford Wednesday night after the first period and earned the win in the 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
