Illinois adds Billy Gonzales to staff

Illinois has added three assistants to new coach Tim Beckman's staff, including former LSU passing game coordinator and receivers coach Billy Gonzales as co-offensive coordinator.

Gonzales is expected to call plays for the Illini offense. He spent the past two years at LSU after working with receivers under current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer at Florida for five seasons. Gonzalez and Beckman worked together on Meyer's staff at Bowling Green.

"Billy Gonzales has been a part of two national championship teams and coached in another national championship game earlier this week and he brings a great reputation to the Fighting Illini," Beckman said in a statement released by the school. "He has been associated with great success wherever he has been. "

Illinois also announced the hiring of former UCF assistant Tim Salem as running backs coach and special teams coordinator and former Toledo secondary coach Steve Clinkscale to an unspecified defensive position.

Beckman still has yet to hire a defensive coordinator.
