February 16, 1984

1984 was a year of firsts for American skier 23-year-old Bill Johnson.

In January, Johnson became the first American to win a downhill race in the World Cup. He continued his series of firsts by capturing the gold medal in the downhill at the 1984 Olympics at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Johnson finished in a time of 1:45.59.

"It's my kind of course, the cocky and brash Johnson said. I can go straight faster than anyone else here. It takes a lot of guts to go out there and throw yourself down the mountain."
