Game of the Week - 2001 schedule
ESPN Classic's Game of the Week documentary series is a comprehensive look at the classic games and moments in sports history. If you love great sports moments, then ESPN Classic is the place to be on Sunday nights. Here is our 2001 schedule: "1951 Bobby Thomson 'Shot Heard 'Round The World,' 50th Anniversary"
With Hall of Famer Willie Mays on deck, unheralded New York Giants third baseman Bobby Thomson hits a game-winning three-run home run off of Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca to win the 1951 National League pennant. The Dodgers were 13 games ahead of the Giants on August 11, but the Giants' 37 wins of their final 44 games would force a three-game playoff with the Dodgers. Thomson's blast won the third game.
"1988 World Series, Game 1: Dodgers-A's - Kirk Gibson Home Run"
In Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, Kirk Gibson hobbles from the clubhouse with an injured leg at the request of Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda to pinch-hit for pitcher Alejandro Pena. Facing Oakland A's closer Dennis Eckersley, Gibson, on a 3-2 count, hits a two-run home run to right field to win the game. It was the first time in the 85-year history of the World Series that a game ended with a come-from-behind home run in the last inning.
"1986 World Series, Game 6: Mets-Red Sox - Buckner's error, 15th Anniversary"
The Curse of the Bambino looms over Shea Stadium. The Red Sox lead 5-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning with two outs when disaster strikes: three straight Mets singles make it 5-4, and a Bob Stanley wild pitch allows Kevin Mitchell to score and tie the game. Mookie Wilson comes to the plate and hits a soft grounder to first that goes through Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner's legs, allowing series MVP Ray Knight to score the winning run, and the Mets to extend the World Series to a seventh game.
"1971 Nebraska-Oklahoma, 30th Anniversary"
Regularly regarded as college football's "Game of the Century," Nebraska flanker Johnny Rodgers, who would win the Heisman Trophy the following season, opens the scoring with an electrifying 72-yard punt return four minutes into the game. The game goes back and forth, and finally Jerry Tagge leads the Cornhuskers on a game winning drive capped off by Jeff Kinney's two-yard plunge with 1:38 remaining to give Nebraska a 35-31 win.
"1992 NCAA East Regional Final: Duke-Kentucky (re-air)"
As time expires, Grant Hill's full court pass and Christian Laettner's turn around jumper from the foul line give Duke a thrilling 104-103 overtime victory, sending them to the Final Four.
"Chargers-Dolphins, 20th Anniversary"
This 1981 AFC Divisional Playoff game is highlighted by the heroic performance of Charger tight end Kellen Winslow, who battles exhaustion throughout the final moments of the game. Rolf Benirschke's 27-yard field goal in overtime lifts the Chargers to a 41-38 victory over the Dolphins in Miami. The contest was voted by the Pro Football Hall of Fame as "The NFL Game of the '80s."
