No. 4 Florida State safety Derwin James said he lives for the big games like No. 11 Ole Miss on Labor Day. "Coach needs to schedule everyone like that. I like playing the big dogs because that's how you find out who can play." He said of course there are bragging rights too when playing the SEC.

Baylor WR Ishmael Zamora has received a 3-game suspension as result of the video showing Zamora beating his dog. "Our football program does not condone this behavior by anyone. We are deeply saddened by it and have worked together with the University to hold Ishmael accountable for his actions," Baylor coach Jim Grobe said in a statement.

Oregon QB Travis Jonsen, who started fall camp as the No. 2 QB and ended as the No. 4 QB said he hasn't thought about transferring (said "No, not yet") and just wants to be as good of a scout team QB as possible. Said he's only worried about this season.

One of the biggest surprises of the Oregon depth chart was true freshman CB Brenden Schooler, who didn't get much ink during the first few weeks of fall camp but landed in the two deep. Secondary coach John Neal said his speed and athleticism made the 6-foot-2 freshman stand out.

Oregon has 10 freshmen in the two deep (redshirt and true). Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said he's hoping those guys play like they've practiced, specifically true freshmen Troy Dye (first string SAM) and Brenden Schooler (second string CB).

Miami will likely start three freshmen linebackers Saturday, and they all might be true freshmen. Mark Richt said it's important all three true freshmen enrolled in January, which gave them an extra five months on campus and put them on the same footing as everyone else learning a new defense. "It's not like the rest of the defense had heard it before," he said. One concern he said will be adjusting to the bigger stage, but the Hurricanes open with FCS Florida A&M.

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich knows there's not a lot of experience in the Ducks' front seven (add to that a new scheme under new DC Brady Hoke), but he said he hopes the group plays "recklessly disciplined" on Saturday in the season opener. Expect a lot of rotation with that group. Helfrich said every player in the two deep there will get a lot of reps.

Michigan WR Jehu Chesson says he's had no setbacks in training camp or mental hurdles to clear after tearing his PCL in January.

I asked Steve Spurrier today if I was ever going to be writing about him as a new selection committee member for the College Football Playoff. "Doubt it, doubt it," he said. Why? "Well, first you've gotta be asked." True. Spurrier wasn't on the short list in the latest round of replacements but could be in the future. He added he hasn't given it much thought, but likes the CFP and thinks it will eventually expand to eight.
