Up In Flames
Dec. 1, 2007: The sound of exiting fans in Morgantown that frigid night was stunned silence. They could not believe their Mountaineers, needing only to beat a 4-7 Pitt team to play for the school's first national title, had choked it away. They could not believe reliable kicker Pat McAfee missed FGs of 19 and 32 yards. They could not believe star QB Pat White dislocated his thumb. They could not believe the three lost fumbles. It was all so painfully unbelievable that the mascot Mountaineer dropped to one knee after it was over and sobbed.
