UNC coach Larry Fedora on Stanford: "Being on this side of the country, we don't get to stay up late enough to watch their games. My wife doesn't let me."

Jared Shanker ESPN Staff Writer

Christian McCaffery quietly rushed for 1,603 yards and led the country with 211 all-purpose yards per game, but he didn't have the same spotlight after Stanford struggled early and he battled injuries. He could jog viewers' memories in the bowl against North Carolina, which is 113th in rush yards per game.

Stanford's current run of 8 straight bowl games started at the Sun Bowl in 2009 -- Andrew Luck's first season as QB. David Shaw was Stanford's offensive coordinator then, and his starting QB in that game -- Tavita Pritchard -- is not QB coach.

David Lombardi ESPN Staff Writer

David Shaw says he met UNC coach Larry Fedora not too long ago. He says Stanford is excited to face the Tar Heels' "fast and physical defense" in the Sun Bowl.

Gus Malzahn is pretty certain his Auburn team will be back to full strength when they play Oklahoma in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "We had some [injuries] to impact players late in the season that really hurt us, and I feel pretty confident now, 30 days away, that we'll have everybody close to 100 percent."

Greg Ostendorf ESPN Staff Writer

So Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops took questions on tonight's Allstate Sugar Bowl teleconference from a helicopter. Stoops was in the process of landing in New York City for the Hall of Fame banquet. The Sooners will face Auburn next month in New Orleans.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron does not expect to have filled his staff in time for the Tigers' Dec. 31 bowl game against Louisville, but he does anticipate junior running back Leonard Fournette playing in the game. "If an injury prevents him, it prevents him. But I think if he's well, he's ready to go, he's going to play." A lingering ankle injury prevented Fournette from playing in four games, including the regular-season finale against Texas A&M.

Bobby Petrino says he'd be in favor of an expanded playoff as long as it doesn't add more games for the student-athletes, which would mean doing away with conference championship games.

David M. Hale ESPN Staff Writer

Much less Heisman politicking from Bobby Petrino than Dabo Swinney. Petrino says he'd like to see Lamar Jackson win the award based on the numbers. "He's got a great resume and his total body of work. Nobody can argue with the number of yards and touchdowns. I'm wishing him the best."

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

Arizona State offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey has talked with Georgia State about its coaching vacancy, according to a source. Lindsey, a candidate for the Southern Miss job last year, also likely would be in the mix at Troy if Neal Brown leaves for another job (Cincinnati possible).

David M. Hale ESPN Staff Writer

Bobby Petrino doesn't have an issue with being passed in the rankings by FSU. "You've got to play well at the end of the year and we know we didn't finish the way we wanted to. We'll just have to live with how we performed late in the season."

Kyle Bonagura ESPN Staff Writer

USC coach Clay Helton didn't bite when asked if he expected to be in the Rose Bowl after finishing behind Colorado in the Pac-12 South standings. "It's another group's job to decide where you fall," he said, "and you hope you've done enough to put yourself in a good light and have the opportunity at a Rose Bowl.

Penn State coach James Franklin said some players during the Selection Show showed some disappointment over not getting into the College Football Playoff, "but 99 percent of the guys in there were excited."

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is perfectly fine with the College Football Playoff field at four teams. "We have the best sport out there because every game truly matters," Swinney said. "If we keep expanding, the season will get watered down and we become the NFL."

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

TCU was a playoff darkhorse in August. The Horned Frogs, at 6-6, are headed to the Liberty bowl to face Georgia after four straight home defeats. On Saturday, in a 30-6 home loss to Kansas State, TCU's streak of 41 straight games with a sack -- tied for the longest nationally and second longest in Big 12 history -- came to an end. Some soul-searching ahead for coach Gary Patterson's program.

Jared Shanker ESPN Staff Writer

Jimbo Fisher doubts Florida State star safety Derwin James will play against Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl, but he said he'll talk to James about playing soon.

Sam Khan Jr. ESPN Staff Writer

No doubt the most intriguing non-New Year's Six bowl involving an SEC team, to me, is the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl: LSU vs. Louisville. Seeing QB Lamar Jackson go up against the LSU defense should be fun to watch.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

Alabama coach Nick Saban said that former UW coach Steve Sarkisian, who's currently an Alabama offensive analyst, will have the same role in planning for the Huskies that he would for any other game. Says that the only insight into Washington is knowledge of the players he might've recruited.

Alex Scarborough ESPN Staff Writer

Nick Saban said he doesn't see having former Washington coach Steve Sarkisian on staff as an analyst as an advantage, pointing out that it's been a while since he was there. Beyond having some knowledge of players from recruiting "He'll have the same role in this game he's had in every other game," Saban said.
