Oregon running back Royce Freeman said he was fine after the Ducks' loss to Cal, but he certainly didn't look fine. He rushed the ball 15 times for 10 yards. The junior hasn't really looked like himself since the Nebraska loss (with the exception of the Wazzu game when he rushed for three TDs and 138 yards on 19 carries).

Justin Davis did not practice with USC on Sunday and is "50-50 at best" to play Thursday against Cal, coach Clay Helton said. Davis suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Trojans' 21-17 win against Colorado on Oct. 8 and did not play the next week against Arizona. Without him Aca'Cedric Ware (103 yards), Dominic Davis (89) and Ronald Jones II (77) combined for 269 yards rushing.

USC senior defensive end Jabari Ruffin has been suspended indefinitely from team activities due to a student-conduct issue, coach Clay Helton announced Sunday. "I don't have a crystal ball about when he could return," Helton said. In six games this year, Ruffin has made two tackles.

South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, a defensive mind, asked if he saw Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes' numbers (734 yards, 88 attempts). "Yeah. I had a heart attack when I saw it."

Some more unbelievable stats from Oklahoma-Texas Tech last night: check out Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes' productivity on third down. Mahomes went 16-of-19 for 263 passing yards and 3 for 39 rushing to gain 17 first downs and score 3 TDs. His QBR on third down was a perfect 100.

A reminder of just how much football is left: The AP top five at Week 9 last season was Ohio State, Baylor, Clemson, LSU, and TCU. They were a combined 36-0. Only one made the College Football Playoff, and the other four ended the regular season with a combined record of 9-9. Don't expect chalk over the final few weeks.

The seven undefeated teams all play on the road this week, and five lost to their Saturday opponent in their last meeting. Second-ranked Michigan and No. 7 Nebraska are on three-game losing streaks to Michigan State and Wisconsin, respectively. The undefeateds (and their fans) might want to make it through this weekend before thinking playoff.

Colorado's DBs openly told the media that they knew what play Stanford was going to run on the game-ending INT. "Right before the play, Chido Awuzie told me the route," Tedric Thompson said. "Right before the play, Chido called my name and told me the route he was going to run."

Fresno State's new coach will have road games at Alabama and Washington next year, plus home games against BYU and Boise State.

ESPN Stats and Information

Poll watching: No. 2 Michigan achieved its highest ranking in the AP Poll since the 2006 season. No. 4 Washington has its highest ranking since 2000. No. 7. Nebraska is at its highest rank in the poll since 2010. West Virginia is ranked in the top 10 for the first time since 2012. Penn State is ranked No. 24 for the first time since 2011.

I would fully expect former Cal coach Jeff Tedford to be the leading candidate at Fresno State. Tedford is looking to lead a program again and Fresno is an ideal spot for him, as he played and coaches there. There could be other candidates, but this search almost for sure will start with Tedford.
