As others have noted, don't be surprised if former Notre Dame defensive coordinator and current Oklahoma State analyst Brian VanGorder is elevated to a spot on the staff to fill the Cowboys' 10th slot on the coaching staff.

Iowa has added Derrick Foster to its football staff, filling the spot that opened this month with the NCAA allowance of a 10th assistant coach. Foster previously coached running backs at Samford. He worked at Northwestern State in 2013 and at Tennessee in 2012. An Alabama native, Foster will coach on the offensive side at Iowa, allowing LeVar Woods to focus primarily on special teams, coach Kirk Ferentz said. Woods coordinated special teams last season for the Hawkeyes while also coaching tight ends.

West Virginia QB Will Grier has been cleared to throw again, according to a source, having recovered from surgery in November to repair the broken middle metacarpal in his throwing hand. Grier missed West Virginia's final two games last season due to the injury.

Oklahoma State's ongoing search for a defensive coordinator has included talks with six candidates, including Tulane defensive coordinator Jack Curtis, South Carolina assistant head coach Lance Thompson, Duke defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, according to sources. Two additional candidates are in play, as well, including a name from the FCS.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien says UCF one-handed linebacker Shaquem Griffin is a "special" story. "He plays the game very fast, very aggressive. He doesn't let his hand slow him down."

Ohio State has elevated Ryan Day from co-offensive coordinator to offensive coordinator. Day will still work with fellow OC Kevin Wilson to run the Buckeyes offense. Urban Meyer: "He has been approached by other schools numerous times this offseason for coordinator and head coach opportunities, and by the National Football League for a coordinator opportunity. I am pleased that he has elected to continue to work on this staff."

SOURCE: Marshall is hiring Byron Thweatt as linebackers coach. Thweatt has been inside linebackers coach at James Madison the past two seasons. The former Virginia All-ACC linebacker has been a head coach at Virginia State and spent eight years on the staff at Richmond.

Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day is staying with the Buckeyes for a second season, a source told ESPN. Day was a candidate for the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator job under new coach Mike Vrabel. He is set to earn $800,000 with Ohio State in 2018.

Former Oklahoma running back Abdul Adams has transferred to Syracuse, the Orange announced Monday. Adams will have to sit out the 2018 season but will have two years of eligibility remaining after that. Adams rushed for 542 yards for the Sooners last season.

Michigan State is hiring Don Treadwell, its former offensive coordinator, for a variety of roles. Treadwell will assist Paul Haynes with the secondary, coach special teams and also serve as an offensive consultant. He'll also be MSU's "freshmen head coach," a new role designed to assist first-year players. He spent the past three years with Haynes as Kent State's offensive coordinator.

Source: Northern Illinois is expected to promote linebackers coach Jeff Knowles to defensive coordinator. Knowles will replace Kevin Kane, who left for the coordinator role at SMU. The DeKalb Daily Chronicle first reported the promotion. Knowles joined NIU's staff in 2017 after three seasons at NC State.

Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson recently underwent successful ACL surgery, according to the school. An additional update on his prognosis could come soon. Wildcats linebacker Nate Hall also recently had successful ACL surgery. Thorson's injury occurred in the Music City Bowl, while Hall's happened during bowl practice.

Washington State officially announced Pat Chun has been hired as the school's new athletic director. Chun has been the athletic director at Florida Atlantic since 2012. He begins Feb. 5.

SOURCE: Cincinnati is expected to hire Steve Stripling as defensive line coach. Stripling spent the past five seasons as Tennessee's defensive line coach and assistant head coach. He begins his second stint at Cincinnati, where he coached defensive line from 2010 to 2012. Stripling also has coached defensive linemen at Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville and Indiana, among other stops.

SOURCES: Matt Canada has emerged as the leading candidate to become Maryland's offensive coordinator, and a deal could be finalized soon. Canada and LSU parted ways earlier this month after he spent just one season with the Tigers (despite a three-year contract). Canada was OC at Pitt in 2016 and has held the role at NC State and Wisconsin, among other stops.

A source confirmed Louisville linebacker coach Cort Dennison is joining Oregon's staff to coach outside linebackers. Dennison will also have a role in recruiting as he was recruiting coordinator at Louisville.

SOURCE: Notre Dame is hiring North Carolina defensive backs coach Terry Joseph to coach safeties. Joseph will fill the vacancy left by Mike Elko's departure. 247 Sports first reported the move. Joseph has coached at LSU, Louisiana Tech, Tennessee, Nebraska and Texas A&M.

Athlete Justin Watkins committed to Florida on Saturday. The No. 17 ranked prospect overall took a visit to Florida and announced his commitment on Twitter. Watkins is now the highest ranked commit in the class for the Gators, three spots ahead of quarterback Emory Jones. With Watkins on board, Florida now has eight ESPN 300 commitments in the 2018 class.

A source confirmed that Minnesota offensive line coach Ed Warinner is expected to join Michigan's staff. The role was not specified, but Warinner joins the Wolverines after spending time at Minnesota and previously at Ohio State.
