The game will take place Sept. 2, 2017, and will be the Hokies' fourth appearance at FedEx Field since 2004 and West Virginia's third since '12. The Mountaineers also will face BYU there on Sept. 24, 2016.
FedEx Field hasn't been kind to the Hokies in recent years, as they have lost to USC (2004), Boise State ('10) and Cincinnati ('12) there.
Virginia Tech and WVU agreed in 2013 to play a two-game series starting in 2021. The contract will start with the 2021 game in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Sept. 18, followed by the second game in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Sept. 24, 2022.
The teams have met 51 times, beginning in 1912, with West Virginia leading 28-22-1 overall. The Mountaineers are 5-1 in games at neutral sites, but this will be the first neutral-site game between the teams since they played in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1971.
The most current portion of the series was played every year from 1973 to 2005, a span of 33 years. The Mountaineers edged the Hokies 17-16 during that time, but Virginia Tech has won six of the past eight meetings (and two in a row) between the border rivals.
FedEx Field also will host Navy-Notre Dame on Nov. 1, 2014, and Maryland-Texas on Sept. 1, 2018.
