Source: Potential Big 12 rule would net OU's Baker Mayfield extra year

Oklahoma is hoping a proposed Big 12 rule change could restore the year of eligibility that quarterback Baker Mayfield lost when he transferred from Texas Tech.

According to a Big 12 official, the proposed rule change would prevent walk-ons who transfer within the conference from losing a season of eligibility. If approved next week during the Big 12's annual spring meetings, it would allow Mayfield to return to Oklahoma for the 2017 season.

Mayfield was forced to sit out a year when he transferred from Texas Tech after his freshman season, even though he was a walk-on. According to current conference rules, walk-ons that transfer in the conference must sit out a year and lose a season of eligibility.

Mayfield finished fourth in the Heisman voting last year and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year while guiding the Sooners to the College Football Playoff.
