Jon Budmayr to miss season opener

Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr will miss the season opener Thursday against UNLV, although it's still not known whether he'll need surgery on his throwing elbow.

Budmayr hasn't thrown passes since Aug. 9 because of swelling in his right elbow. He later began experiencing problems with a nerve that causes numbness in his throwing hand.

Badgers coach Bret Bielema said Saturday he expects the sophomore to miss an extended period. Budmayr entered preseason camp as Wisconsin's No. 1 quarterback, but his injury and the strong play of North Carolina State transfer Russell Wilson shuffled the depth chart.

Wilson will make his first start for the Badgers on Thursday night, while Joe Brennan will serve as his backup.
