Nick Montana released for transfer

Nick Montana, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, has been granted his release from Washington so he may transfer to another program, Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian said.

Montana is considering a pair of two-year colleges -- Blinn College in Texas or El Camino College in California, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Montana, who redshirted in 2010, appeared in six games for the Huskies in 2011, starting one, against Oregon State. He completed 24 of 42 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns and was intercepted twice.

Montana landed at Washington with much fanfare as one of the jewels in Sarkisian's second recruiting class. But Montana was beaten out for the starting role by Keith Price last spring and Price threw for a school record 33 touchdowns this season.

When he was being recruited, Montana had also considered Notre Dame, his father's alma mater, as well as LSU, Ohio State, Stanford, Alabama and Georgia.
