Michigan St. makes QB change

Michigan State is making a change at quarterback and will give sophomore Connor Cook his first career start on Saturday against South Florida.

The team also announced that redshirt freshman Tyler O'Connor will serve as Cook's backup. O'Connor is expected to make his debut vs. the Bulls.

Senior Andrew Maxwell had started the previous 14 games for the Spartans, including last week's 26-13 win over Western Michigan. But Michigan State's passing game has struggled since last season, and Maxwell was just 11-of-21 for 74 yards in the opener. Head coach Mark Dantonio re-opened the quarterback competition this week in practice.

Cook has played in four games during his career and led the Spartans on their game-winning drive in last season's victory over TCU in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. He was 6-of-16 for 42 yards in the Western Michigan game.
