Music fans were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Gainesville, Florida, native Tom Petty this week. As a tribute to his passing, the Florida Gators played Petty's song "I Won't Back Down" before the start of the fourth quarter of Saturday's home game against the LSU Tigers.
The crowd joined together to sing the song. Before Petty was famous, he once worked as a groundskeeper at UF. On UF's website, a statement announcing the plan for the tribute also mentioned that the school might look to adopt playing the song as a new tradition.
