Every top 25 team's best reason for optimism next season

Even with the College Football Playoff selection committee's top 25 still battling for semifinal and New Year's Six bowl positions, it's never too early to look ahead to next season.

William Weinbaum ESPN

Former Michigan All-America halfback & Giants All-Pro Ron Johnson died Sat. at 71. A former Natl. Football Fndtn. chairman, Johnson was "everything you wanted in a player, teammate, and most importantly as a person," said his NFF successor Archie Manning in a statement Mon. A 1992 College Football HoF inductee, Johnson was a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, Mich.'s 1st African-American captain & NY's 1st 1,000-yard rusher (1970 & ‘72). His late brother Alex won the ‘70 AL batting title as a Calif. Angel.

Assume Clemson, Michigan, Oklahoma and Georgia all win out, Alabama finishes 12-1 and Notre Dame finishes 11-1. In that scenario, Playoff Predictor makes Clemson and Georgia virtual locks and considers Michigan very likely to get in. The decision for the last spot would be almost a toss-up between Oklahoma and Alabama, but our model thinks the committee is more likely to select the Sooners, by a hair. Notre Dame would be the least likely of the six to get in.

If Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan and Oklahoma all win out, Playoff Predictor thinks Michigan (65%) is more likely to take that last spot and get in the playoff than Oklahoma (40%).
