UCF-Austin Peay set as teams fill schedules

UCF had two games called off due to Hurricane Irma and had replaced only one of them before the NCAA approved a waiver Thursday for Austin Peay to add a 12th regular-season game to its schedule so UCF could get back to 11.

As expected, UCF and Memphis have rescheduled their game for Sept. 30 in Orlando. The two teams were supposed to meet last Friday, but Hurricane Irma forced its postponement. To make this move, Memphis canceled its game against Georgia State, and UCF canceled its game against Maine -- both scheduled for Sept. 30. UCF is still looking to add an 11th game for its bye week, Oct. 28.

UCF's home football stadium is being used as a staging area for the National Guard in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said the school's administration reached out to see whether UCF had an interest in flipping the site for their home-and-home series, having the game this year in Atlanta and the 2020 matchup in Orlando. Johnson said UCF had no interest in doing that, so their game this weekend was canceled as the Knights deal with the after effects from Hurricane Irma. Their home stadium is being used as a staging area for the National Guard, and many in the area remain without power.

The main reason for the Georgia Tech-UCF cancellation is that UCF is hosting up to 1,000 National Guard personnel in and around Spectrum Stadium. There are also about 250 vehicles on campus. Florida Gov. Rick Scott asked UCF to host the National Guard as part of the Hurricane Irma recovery effort. Some UCF players also were dismissed to be with their families before the storm hit. "We are in complete agreement with the decision," Georgia Tech AD Todd Stansbury said.

Sources: The Georgia Tech-UCF game scheduled for Saturday in Orlando will not be played, as UCF continues to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. It's unlikely the game will be made up later in the season. WSB television in Atlanta first reported the likely cancellation. UCF had to cancel last week's game against Memphis as it braced for the hurricane. Its campus remains closed through Wednesday.

AAC commissioner Mike Aresco says safety of teams is the top priority and assessing the loss of two league games won't be addressed until next week. The Memphis-UCF and USF-Connecticut games likely won't be rescheduled (no common open dates). The AAC is exploring scenarios for the league race and could have its athletic directors determine the tiebreakers to use.
