Pitt QB Browne's season over after surgery

After undergoing surgery on his right shoulder, Pittsburgh quarterback Max Browne is out for the rest of the season. This was the final season of eligibility for Browne, a graduate transfer from Southern California.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said Jordan Whitehead had 80 defensive snaps last week on defense, so his offensive reps are limited. "We can't wear him out, and I felt like we wore him out a little bit defensively [vs. Syracuse]. We have to be careful what we do with him. He'll do anything you ask, but eventually, the tank gets put on 'E.'"

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi on last year's 76-61 win over Syracuse: "Me and Dino [Babers] have laughed about it during the offseason. ... If I was the defensive coordinator, I'd be really, really miserable. As the head coach, I was only a little miserable. But head coaches are always miserable."

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Dino Babers compared the way last year's 76-61 loss to Pitt unfolded to the Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns boxing match in 1985. "The fight started and you were like, 'Oh my God, how can they keep this pace up? Somebody is not going to survive this thing and it was the most exciting thing you saw. ... (In the game) You didn't have time to make adjustments on the sideline. It took your breath away and you were totally exhausted. I'm not sure i want to go through it again, either. It was very taxing."
