Roundtable: Pleasant surprise of 2016 season

There have been some eyebrow-raising performances in the SEC this season, but perhaps nothing has been as surprising as South Carolina's bowl run.

Vanderbilt and coach Derek Mason have started discussions about a revised contract that would include a raise and more years, ESPN has learned. The Commodores won four of their final six games, closing with wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee, to finish 6-6 and ensure their first bowl game under Mason, who has improved his record in each of the past two seasons.

Considering how grim things looked after Derek Mason's first season (3-9, two coordinator changes) he's done a nice job getting it fixed. Impressive job to get the Commodores to a bowl game.

In a game that Tennessee had to win in order to have a shot at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Vols have now given up 45 points and 589 yards to Vanderbilt -- the SEC's worst statistical offense. The Commodores lead by 11 with four minutes left. It's as if the SEC East just doesn't want anything nice in 2016

Webb sees plenty of daylight on TD run

Vanderbilt's Ralph Webb runs through a hole wide enough for a truck as he goes 28 yards for a back-breaking touchdown. The Commodores lead No. 17 Tennessee 45-34 with a little more than four minutes remaining.

Upright is unkind to Tennessee

K Aaron Medley hits high off the right upright from 37 yards as Tennessee continues to trail Vanderbil, 38-34 in the fourth quarter.

Vandy takes lead in fourth quarter

Darrius Sims sweeps around left end for a 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The Commodores lead the Volunteers 38-34.
