Shot Vandy players recovering, still suspended

Defensive backs Tae Daley and Frank Coppet remain suspended from the Vanderbilt football team following a June incident in which both players were shot trying to recover a teammate's stolen cellphone.

Vandy coach Derek Mason believes quarterback Kyle Shurmur is taking the right steps forward in his progress and thinks the QB he saw that played with more command and confidence at the end of the 2016 season will be the same one who starts this fall. "We need his mastery of the offense to take hold. … I've been waiting for him to grow up, he's grown up. Andy [Ludwig]'s giving him the keys to the car, we let the engine run, and now [Shurmur is] ready to take off and go."

Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason believes RB Ralph Webb deserves more attention and credit than he gets. Webb has a school-record 3,342 rushing yards. "He's the back that no one talks about but he always performs. Any time you can make yourself a three-dimensional back in this conference, that's a big thing. … The best part of Ralph Webb is to come."
