Source: Northern Illinois is expected to promote linebackers coach Jeff Knowles to defensive coordinator. Knowles will replace Kevin Kane, who left for the coordinator role at SMU. The DeKalb Daily Chronicle first reported the promotion. Knowles joined NIU's staff in 2017 after three seasons at NC State.

SMU coach Sonny Dykes confirmed to me that he's hiring Northern Illinois defensive coordinator Kevin Kane to the same position with the Mustangs. Football Scoop first reported the move. Kane did an excellent job with the NIU defense in 2017 after moving into the coordinator role the year before. Dykes' new staff with SMU is nearly complete.

Northern Illinois running backs coach Jordan Lynch, a 2013 Heisman Trophy finalist, is leaving to become head coach at Chicago's Mount Carmel High School, his alma mater. Lynch will replace Hall of Fame coach Frank Lenti, who won 374 games and 11 state titles.
