McKinley slotted into top 10

Takkarist McKinley might be undersized for a defensive end at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, but his pass-rushing ability and speed make him a sought-after edge rusher. Mel Kiper pegs him as a top-10 prospect. Big Board (Insider)

With Mark Helfrich's firing, Oregon's top 30 recruiting class is now in limbo. The Ducks have 14 commitments, the No. 27 class in the RecruitingNation national rankings and three ESPN 300 commitments. The highest-ranked recruits in Oregon's class are No. 14 athlete Jaylon Redd of Rancho Cucamonga (California) High School and No. 6 tight end Tre' McKitty of Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy. Both Redd and McKitty will be prospects other schools will surely attempt to lure away with the coaching change. Redd picked Oregon over Nebraska and UCLA, while McKitty picked the Ducks over Florida State and Florida.

UCLA DL Eddie Vanderdoes announced he will forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. At one time, Vanderdoes was viewed as a potential first-round pick, but tore his ACL in the first game of the 2015 season. He returned healthy this year and finished the season with 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a key member up front on a very good UCLA defense.

UCLA LT Conor McDermott and DE Takkarist McKinley have both accepted invitations to play in the Senior Bowl. McDermott came into the season with high expectations and though he played well for most of the season, the Bruins struggled on the offensive line. McKinley was one of the breakout stars in the Pac-12 this year. His finished tied for 10th in the country with 10 sacks in 11 games.

There is a contingent of UCLA fans ready to move on from Jim Mora, but it would be shocking if athletic director Dan Guerrero made that decision this offseason. The Bruins' 4-8 season was an abject failure, but Mora is under contract through the 2021 season and would be owed a buyout of $14.76 million, which is 80 percent of what remains on his contract. That's too much for a school like UCLA to justify paying to get rid of a coach who has averaged 8.2 wins a year for five seasons.

UCLA coach Jim Mora really had no choice in making the decision on the fate of OC Kennedy Polamalu. Losing QB Josh Rosen in the middle of the season obviously hurt, but the Bruins never seemed comfortable as they transitioned away from former OC Noel Mazzone's spread offense. In conference play, UCLA averaged just 5.43 yards per play, which ranked second-to-last in the Pac-12 and a measly 84.3 rushing yards per game. The expectation is for Mora to look elsewhere for a replacement, though QB coach Marques Tuiasosopo might be an internal option.

UCLA is officially looking for a new offensive coordinator. The Bruins announced Sunday they will not renew the contract of Kennedy Polamalu. "I want to thank Kennedy for his hard work, dedication to the program and commitment to our student-athletes," coach Jim Mora said in a statement. "He is a professional in every sense of the word."

Sub-.500 teams will be needed for bowls again

The door is now open for sub-.500 teams to play in bowls again this season. There are 80 bowl slots to fill, and Saturday's games brought the number of bowl-eligible teams to 74.

Cal, giving up a league-worst 45 ppg coming in, held UCLA to 10 in a 36-10 finale victory. The Golden Bears finish 5-7. Their offense was good enough to return to bowl eligibility for a second straight year, but their defense worsened significantly in 2016, leading to crippling losses against losing teams.

ESPN Stats and Information

UCLA's first six losses of the season came by an average of seven points. Their final two losses came by an average of 24 points.

Watch: UCLA at California

UCLA's 84.3 rushing yards per game is the second-lowest average in the nation, but Cal is allowing the second-most rushing yards at 290.1. Who will win the matchup on the ground between struggling units? Live on ESPN2/WatchESPN

Kyle Bonagura ESPN Staff Writer

NC State's win against North Carolina is its sixth win, clinching bowl eligibility. It's a blow for all the potential five-win teams hoping to make a bowl, but especially UCLA, which figures to be right on the bubble with a win against Cal and owns a better APR score than NC State.
