ASU defense seals road win

The Sun Devils defense clamped down on the Roadrunners in the second half to overcome a nine-point deficit and win 32-28 in the Alamodome. Arizona State sidestepped an upset from UTSA, erasing a 28-15 deficit heading into the fourth quarter and going on to a 32-28 road win in San Antonio. A pair of Zane Gonzalez field goals (he had four total), a touchdown pass from Manny Wilkins to Frederick Gammage and a Kalen Ballage touchdown run paced the Sun Devils, who scored 20 unanswered points. UTSA falls to 0-8 all-time against Power 5 opponents and 0-4 against the Pac-12. Credit the ASU defense for buckling down hard in the fourth quarter. They forced UTSA to three-and-outs on four straight drives before the Roadrunners turned it over on downs on their final drive.

UTSA leads Arizona State 14-12 at halftime on ESPN2. The second quarter was accented by mistakes for the Sun Devils, who saw a 57-yard touchdown pass from Manny Wilkins to N'Keal Harry negated by a holding penalty and Wilkins threw an interception on the next play. The defense did buckle down to keep UTSA off the scoreboard. Wilkins and Harry did manage to hook up on a 27-yard touchdown with three seconds left in the half. The Sun Devils opted to go for two points, but failed the attempt.

Arizona STate Down Early

After JaBryce Taylor scored earlier on a diving catch, Jalen Rhodes did the same, this time in the front corner of the end zone to increase UTSA's lead over Arizona State to 14-3.

So far the explosive Arizona State offense that put up 68 points last week is nowhere to be found. UTSA leads the Sun Devils 14-3 after the first quarter on ESPN2. UTSA quarterback Dalton Sturm has tossed a pair of touchdowns, the second coming of a muffed punt by Kalen Ballage -- who tried to pick up a bouncing ball but instead placed the Road Runners in ASU's red zone. Third down efficiency has been the name of the game so far. ASU is just 1 of 4 while UTSA is 3 of 5.
