Youngstown DE Derek Rivers, the Patriots' initial third-round pick (No. 83), just held a conference call with reporters and one of the biggest takeaways was how he said the Senior Bowl was a great experience for him because he comes from a smaller school. "For an FCS guy, it's very important," he said. "Everybody questions the competition ... when I got to practice and play with some of those guys that I see on TV, on ESPN, it was pretty cool."

Patriots use first pick on Derek Rivers

The Super Bowl champions had to wait 83 picks before drafting the Youngstown State DE, whom Mel Kiper Jr. calls an under-the-radar pass-rusher with impressive tape and workout numbers.

The Patriots have selected Youngstown defensive end Derek Rivers with their initial draft choice, No. 83 overall (third round). Rivers set a school record with 41 sacks, totaled 35 repetitions on the bench press, and his 2.53-second 20-yard split was among the best at the position and an indication of his burst. He was a pre-draft visitor to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
