DT Tuli Letuligasenoa gives USC power run defender

ESPN 300 DT Tuli Letuligasenoa has become USC's first 2018 commitment of the spring. What he brings: Letuligasenoa is a powerful defender with very good overall size and a good first-step.

UCLA and USC added big pieces to their 2018 recruiting classes on Sunday. The Bruins scored a huge quarterback prize in Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the nation's No. 50 overall prospect and No. 3 dual-threat quarterback. Thompson-Robinson would be the first ESPN 300 quarterback signed by UCLA since Josh Rosen in the 2015 class, who finished that year as the No. 50 overall prospect. The Trojans got a commitment from a big name and presence along the defensive line in No. 6 defensive tackle and No. 102 overall prospect Tuli Letuligasenoa. USC signed two ESPN 300 defensive tackles in the 2017 class in Jay Tufele and Marlon Tuipulotu, as the Trojans are making a concerted effort to load up along the defensive line.

It should not come as a surprise that Alabama leads the list of national title contenders heading into the 2017 college football season. However, some of the teams that are right on their tail may come as more of a surprise.

First 2018 class rankings: USC

USC was the talk of signing day, wrapping up with a top-five class. Where are the Trojans ranked now?

When was the last time two players from Idaho made the ESPN 300? Before today, the answer was never. Defensive tackle Tommy Togiai of Pocatello Highland and Washington quarterback commit Colson Yankoff became the first duo from Idaho to crack the top 300 ranking. Togiai, who lists Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, TCU, USC and Washington as his top teams, is the No. 52 player overall. Yankoff, who committed to UDub in March, is the 82nd ranked player.

As usual, the Pac-12 and West region dominate the quarterback discussion. Of the top 11 quarterbacks in the nation, seven have ties to the Pac-12 or West region. Nos. 2 and 7 pocket passers Jacob Sirmon and Colson Yankoff are committed to Washington, No. 3 pocket passer and No. 32 overall prospect Adrian Martinez is committed to Cal, No. 48 overall prospect Tanner McKee resides in Southern California, No. 50 overall prospect and No. 3 dual-threat quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson hails from Nevada and could commit to UCLA over Michigan this weekend and Nos. 64 and 67 overall prospects, Jack West and Matt Corral, are committed to Stanford and USC, respectively.

After finishing with the No. 5 recruiting class in 2017, USC is back in the top ten in the initial 2018 class rankings. The Trojans check in at No. 9 overall, led by the nation's No. 1 linebacker and No. 21 overall prospect, Palaie Gaoteote. Quarterback Matt Corral checks in and No. 67, cornerback Marcus Johnson is No. 139, outside linebacker Raymond Scott is No. 189 and defensive end Bo Calvert is No. 278. Over the past three recruiting classes, USC has signed 43 ESPN 300 prospects and double digits should be well within reach again in the 2018 class.

The Pac-12 hasn't finished with two teams in the top-10 of the national recruiting rankings since the 2010 class, when USC and UCLA accomplished the feat. The conference as a whole regularly gets off to a slower start on the trail as many West region prospects take their time with the process, but USC and Washington are using strong 2016 seasons -- complete with a College Football Playoff berth and a terrifically entertaining Rose Bowl win -- to get off to strong starts with the 2018 class. Washington leads the way for the conference at No. 8, while USC checks in right behind at No. 9. The Trojans' five ESPN 300 prospects are the most in the Pac-12, while Washington has four ESPN 300 commitments.

Several members of USC's outgoing class are here to accept their Rose Bowl rings. Adoree' Jackson and JuJu Smith-Schuster received the loudest cheers.

It's a beautiful day in Los Angeles, where USC is about 45 minutes from beginning its spring game. The Trojans are light on healthy bodies, so it won't be a true game-like experience, but it will be a good opportunity to see QB Sam Darnold one lasts time before the opener next year against Western Michigan.

ESPN Stats and Information

All eyes will be on QB Sam Darnold in the USC spring game (Saturday, 3 p.m. ET). The Hesiman hopeful ranked high in several areas after being named the starter on Sept. 23 last season.
