Illinois' running game was nonexistent in a 34-10 loss against Western Michigan. The Illini carried 15 times for three yards. Even a 312-yard passing effort from QB Wes Lunt can't overcome that stat. Illinois is now 1-2 under Lovie Smith and has a needed bye week before playing at Nebraska to begin Big Ten play. The Illini have a long way to go.

The Broncos lead Illinois 24-7 at halftime on the road two weeks after beating Northwestern 22-21 in Evanston. Illinois has no ground game so far. The Illini have carried nine times for a total of one yard.

Chatted with Lovie Smith and his staff today. One big impression was that both OC Garrick McGee and DC Hardy Nickerson really believe in Smith. McGee was the offensive coordinator at Louisville last year and would have coached Heisman contender Lamar Jackson this year, but left to work with Smith. We'll see if they can get a win tomorrow against Western Michigan, the preseason favorite in the MAC.

North Carolina didn't play a perfect game, but the Tar Heels needed a win after a disappointing loss to Georgia in the season opener and were able to beat Illinois 48-23. T.J. Logan, who played so well against the Bulldogs, had three scores and now has five on the season. Last year, Logan had six total touchdowns. Though Illinois lost, there were some encouraging signs. Ke'Shawn Vaughn had 116 yards and a score and averaged 7.7 yards per carry.
