William & Mary is hiring Mike London as its next coach, sources tell ESPN. An official announcement is expected later Monday. Football Scoop first reported the move. London has spent the past two seasons at Howard University, going 11-10. He went 27-46 in six seasons at Virginia and now returns to the Colonial Athletic Association, where he guided Richmond to the FCS national title in 2008. He replaces Jimmye Laycock, who is retiring after 39 seasons at William & Mary.

Fans are eager to enter Dix Stadium less than 30 minutes before Kent State's home opener against Howard University. After Howard's 43-40 upset victory over UNLV last Saturday, Kent State fans interviewed before the game predict that Kent State will win, but the score may be close.

Not only are people at Howard still beaming about last week's win, but those at other historically black colleges and universities are, too. I'm told there have been calls from other HBCUs made to Howard this week. The Bison upset win over FBS-level UNLV has been seen as a hopeful moment that more of the FCS-level schools wish to replicate with regularity.

Sure, he's got an NFL MVP for a brother. But Howard's quarterback has a lot more going on for himself than that. "He's Caylin Newton," Howard coach Mike London told me today about his true freshman QB who's Cam Newton's youngest sibling. "He wants to be his own man. We're going to allow him to operate in his own identity. He's the quarterback at Howard University. And we're going to get him better."

It's been a wild week at Howard University. Four days after beating UNLV in the largest point-spread upset in college football history, the Bison are still answering questions about Week 1. Coach Mike London told me he doesn't mind that, but he is ready for focus to shift to this Saturday's road trip to Kent State. "It's human nature that you want to bask in the glory a little bit, but you also are a competitor, so you want to get to the next game."

Sorry, NFL, but college football owns Sunday, too

After what we saw in college football's first weekend -- the second-largest comeback ever, the biggest upset ever and several season-changing injuries -- the pro league is going to have to do something special to impress us.
