The news out of the first practice of the spring in the Big 12 featured Joel Lanning, the Iowa State senior who started 14 games at quarterback over the past two seasons. He practiced Tuesday at linebacker. Lanning was not expected to retain the QB position, won by Jacob Park late last season. But defense? Iowa State passing game coordinator Jim Hofher hinted last week that changes were in store for Lanning, one of the Cyclones' "best players," regardless of position, Hofher said. "We've got to have a plan with Joel all over the field, because he's that capable. He's that productive. He's that tough."
Developing defensive linemen and building on last season's momentum are the priorities for Iowa State in coach Matt Campbell's second season.

But Jacob Park opens spring practice with the Cyclones tomorrow as a clear-cut No. 1 QB after unseating starter Joel Lanning last season. His connection with Iowa State's Matt Campbell, forged quickly after the coach's 2015 hire, led Park to Ames from junior college. "You go through an experience like he had at Georgia," Campbell said, "it's not easy to bounce back." But Park has bounced back, outplaying some of the top QBs nationally in the final month of last season to give Iowa State hope for big improvement in 2017.
