Monticello Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains cradle the oldest Division I stadium in the state of Virginia. Scott Stadium sits in the midst of the Carl Smith Center and houses David A. Harrison III Field. It was built in 1931 as a replacement for the old Lambeth Field, otherwise known as "Colonnades." Its namesake is former university rector and donor Frederic Scott and was originally built to house 25,000 fans.
The field surface was grass until 1974, when artificial turf was installed. Unfortunately, the change made the long-standing tradition of a mounted Cavalier striding into the stadium impossible. The field remained turf until 1994, when grass was re-installed, allowing the Cavalier to once more ride into the stadium with the football team.
Through many construction projects over the years Scott Stadium now holds a capacity of more than 61,000 spectators. The largest crowded was recorded Aug. 30, 2008, when 64,947 saw Virginia, affectionately nicknamed the Wahoos, get swamped by USC, 52-7.
It is not uncommon for one to see men dressed in coats and ties and women dressed in sundresses while attending the games at Scott Stadium. It has been a tradition for years.
In 2003, however, then coach Al Groh made a plea with the students to put down the traditional garb for orange attire. Dispersed among the crowd you'll find more orange these seasons, but tony outfits are still prevalent.
