ESPN 25 Power Rankings: Week: 5

After games of Dec. 23

The 40th City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., brought out six teams in the ESPN 25 Power Rankings, including brand new No. 1 Montverde (Fla.) Academy. The Eagles went into the tournament knowing all eyes were on them and teams were going to bring their best shot. The spotlight seems to be a fitting place for the Eagles as they took home the first-place trophy and their top recruit, Dakari Johnson, copped MVP honors.

Other City of Palms participants didn't fare as well. Previous No. 5 Chester (Pa.) fell all the way to No. 16 after defeats at the hands of Highland (Utah) Lone Peak and Chicago Whitney Young. Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI dropped 7 spots to No. 21 after losing by 10 points in its first game of the tournament.

But the biggest surprise of the past week came out of the Iolani Classic in Honolulu. LaPorte (ind.) La Lumiere made it to the tournament championship after defeating Houston Yates and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). The Lakers were narrowly beaten by Findlay Prep (Las Vegas) in the championship game. The performance bumps them into the rankings for the first time, debuting at No. 20.

ESPN 25 Power Rankings: Week: 5
1Montverde Academy (11-0)
Montverde, FL

Last Week: 1
After capturing the No. 1 ranking last week, Montverde was challenged right away at the City of Palms Classic in Florida. It proved it was up to the test by besting three ESPN 25 top-10 teams on its way to the tournament championship.
2Findlay Prep (17-0)
Henderson, NV

Last Week: 2
Findlay cruised to the Iolani Classic championship in Honolulu this past week, taking care of No. 15 Montrose Christian and a hot La Lumiere team that had already defeated ESPN 25 foes Yates and Oak Hill.
3Huntington Prep (14-0)
Huntington, WV

Last Week: 3
In the City of Palms Signature Series, Huntington Prep overtook Arlington County Day School (Jacksonville, Fla.) twice to take the championship. Top ESPN 100 prospect Andrew Wiggins showed out for the Express, racking up 31 points in a game versus HCYA North (Houston).
4Lone Peak (10-1)
Highland, UT

Last Week: 4
Lone Peak ran out of gas against Montverde in the City of Palms championship game, but to get there the Knights took care of three tough opponents including Chester (Pa.) and Southwind.
5Long Beach Polytechnic (8-1)
Long Beach, CA

Last Week: 6
The Jackrabbits got off to a quick start at the City of Palms with two impressive victories over Tift County (Tifton, Ga.) and Omaha Central and finished the tournament in third place. The absence of 2014 star Kameron Chatman, who is ineligible until March, seemed to be a factor in Long Beach Poly's overwhelming loss to Montverde, though, and will be something to keep an eye on this season.
6Whitney Young (6-1)
Chicago, IL

Last Week: 9
Whitney Young continues to rip off big wins. Before taking victories over Chester and Omaha Central on their way to fifth place at the City of Palms, the Dolphins almost shocked No. 1 Montverde in a quarterfinal tilt, falling by just 5 points.
7St. Anthony (5-0)
Jersey City, NJ

Last Week: 8
St. Anthony takes a step up in the rankings mostly due to missteps by a couple of teams ahead of it but is still taking care of an undefeated record.
8Southwind (10-3)
Memphis, TN

Following its nationally televised win over Simeon earlier this month, there has been no letdown for DeSoto. The Eagles have continued to take care of business with wins over Cedar Hill (Texas) and South Grand Prairie (Texas) last week.
10Oak Hill Academy (16-2)
Mouth of Wilson, VA

11Neal F. Simeon (4-1)

13Mater Dei (10-0)
Santa Ana, CA

Last Week: 17
Mater Dei is the best team out West. It smashed Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) and a very talented Our Savior New American squad from Centereach, N.Y., on its way to a Jerry Tarkanian Classic championship.
14Omaha Central (5-2)
Omaha, NE

Last Week: 22
Omaha Central was just on the cusp of pulling off two ESPN 25 upsets but couldn't get it done, losing by 3 points each to Long Beach Poly and Whitney Young at the City of Palms.
15Montrose Christian (8-2)
Rockville, MD

Last Week: 15
Montrose Christian stayed put after a 2-2 performance in the Iolani Classic. The trip to Hawaii was the bright spot in a week that included losses to top-flight teams Oak Hill and Findlay Prep.
16Chester (5-2)
Chester, PA

Last Week: 5
Chester registered one of the week's most surprising results, losing to Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) at the City of Palms Classic. The Clippers also dropped a game to Whitney Young (Chicago) and picked up W's against Lake Highland (Orlando, Fla.) and Lake Wales (Fla.).
17Neumann-Goretti (4-0)
Philadelphia, PA

Last Week: 16
Neumann-Goretti protected its perfect record by passing an easy test from conference foe Lansdale Catholic. Next up for the Saints: a chance to impress against Tigard (Oregon) in the Les Schwab Invitational.
18Fort Bend Travis (12-2)
Richmond, TX

Last Week: 18
Fort Bend Travis had a chance to rest injured star Andrew Harrison in an easy win against Fort Bend Austin. The competition gets more intense at this week's MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
19La Lumiere (13-1)
La Porte, IN

Last Week: --

22West (7-0)

West had little trouble preserving its perfect record against Iowa City on Dec. 21. The Trojans were perfect through 2012. Can they extend the run into 2013?
23West Charlotte (7-0)
Charlotte, NC

24Saint John Bosco (8-1)
Bellflower, CA

Last Week: --
St. John Bosco got an early Christmas present when the Braves took down previously undefeated Blanche Ely (Fla.) in the Chick-fil-A Classic Championship. It doesn't get easier for the Braves, who play Salesian next.
25Jack Yates (15-3)
Houston, TX

Last Week: 24
Another of La Lumiere's victims, Yates' hopes were derailed at the Iolani Classic. The Lakers ended a 12-game winning streak for the Lions.
Dropped out: No. 20 Tift County and No. 25 Gonzaga College
