espnW 25 Power Rankings: Week 3


It's Week 3 of the espnW Top 25 Power Rankings, and we have a new No. 1. La Jolla Country Day (CA) won four games in four days at the Nike Tournament of Champions, beating No. 3 Sierra Canyon (CA) in the finals 44-43. Class of 2023 prospect Breya Cunningham had 19 points, while Oregon signee Te-Hina Paopao scored 13.

Sierra Canyon, whose backcourt features Duke signee Vanessa DeJesus and Texas signee Ashley Chevalier, took a 43-42 lead on Alexis Mark's basket with 5.8 seconds remaining, but La Jolla's Jazzy Anousinh hit the game-winning layup as time expired.

DeSoto (TX) dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 after losing to No. 11 South Grand Prairie (TX), while Sierra Canyon dropped to No. 4.

The Joe Smith Division All-Tournament team at the TOC consisted of MVP Paopao, Cunningham, Chevalier, DeJesus, Delicia Pinnick of New Hope Academy (MD), Ashley Hiraki of Archbishop Mitty (CA), Kaylah Ivey of Riverdale Baptist (MD), Jayda Curry of Centennial (CA), Aishah Brown of Centennial (NV), Aaliyah Edwards of Crestwood Prep (CAN), Ryanne Allen of Archbishop Wood (PA) and Iyanna Lamb of Long Beach Poly (CA). -- Dan Olson

La Jolla Country Day won the Nike Tournament of Champions, defeating No. 3 Sierra Canyon (CA) 44-43 in the finals. Te-Hina Paopao earned MVP honors and Breya Cunningham made the all-tournament team.

DeSoto, TX

Last Week: 1
DeSoto lost to No. 12 South Grand Prairie (X) 50-42 on the road, then rebounded to beat Cedar Hill (TX) 57-41 to get back on track. DeSoto's rematch against South Grand Prairie takes place on Jan. 21 at home.
3Detroit Edison Academy (4-0)
Detroit, MI

Last Week: 3
Despite trailing after the first quarter, Detroit Edison Academy outscored Michigan Center 41-25 in the second half en route to a 62-44 victory at home. Gabrielle Elliott scored 23 points while Damiya Hagemann dropped 11 points and dished out 11 assists.
4Sierra Canyon (10-2)
Chatsworth, CA

Last Week: 2
Sierra Canyon lost to No. 1 La Jolla Country Day (CA) 44-43 in the finals of the Joe Smith Division at the Nike Tournament of champions. Aside from that, the Trailblazers' only other loss was to No. 2 DeSoto (TX) in November. Sierra Canyon's backcourt of Ashley Chevalier and Vanessa DeJesus continues to dominate.

Hopkins went untested against Tartan (MN), winning 99-24. UConn signee Paige Bueckers is the top prospect in the Class of 2020, while Maya Nnaji is an emerging sophomore forward.

Mount Notre Dame beat Lebanon (OH) 68-32 in its only game of the week. Sophomore guard KK Bransford and junior guard Laila Phelia are the keys to Mount Notre Dame's success.
7Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (10-1)
Chattanooga, TN

Last Week: 7
Hamilton Heights Christian went 5-0 at the Nike Tournament of Champions, competing in the Clare Droesch Division. Treasure Hunt averaged 18 points per game and took home MVP honors.

Senior guard Deja Kelly, a North Carolina signee, is 232 points shy of 3,000 in her prep school career.

Fairfax, VA

Paul VI beat Capital Christian (MD) 69-38 and Stone Ridge (VA) 53-28. Junior guard Lee Volker averaged 15 points per game in the two wins.

Tampa Bay Tech beat Bloomingdale (FL) 64-30. Janiah Barker is averaging 12.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season.

Grand Prairie, TX

Last Week: 20
Kiara Jackson and Kendall McGruder combined for 21 points as South Grand Prairie beat previous No. 1 DeSoto (TX) 50-42 at home. The Warriors led by as many as 17 points in the convincing win.

Last Week: 6
Riverdale Baptist went 3-1 at the Nike Tournament of Champions, losing to No. 3 Sierra Canyon (CA) 58-52 in the semifinals. Kaylah Ivey was named to the all-tournament team.

Winston-Salem, NC

Last Week: 11
Winston-Salem Prep won three games at the She Got Game Classic-Charlotte. Kiandra Browne and Sandrine Clesca earned game MVP honors for the week.
14St. Frances Academy (5-1)

St. Frances Academy beat Institute of Notre Dame 58-22 in its only game of the week. Angel Reese and Aniya Gourdine are key factors in St. Frances' success.

Atlanta, GA

Last Week: 13
Westlake had two wins vs. in-state opponents, defeating Griffin (GA) 85-44 and Colquitt County (GA) 83-37. The backcourt of Ta'Niya Latson and Raven Johnson combined for 34.5 points per game in the two wins. Johnson has 996 career points.

Bishop McNamara beat Bishop O'Connell (VA) 71-44 and Sts. Neumann-Goretti (PA) 83-43. Liatu King averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds in the two wins.

Northwestern was idle this week. Madison Layden leads the state of Indiana in scoring with 28 points per game and is shooting 42 percent from the arc and 92 percent from the stripe.

Archbishop Mitty went 2-2 at the Nike Tournament of Champions. Junior Katie Springs was impressive, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 boards vs. Centennial (NV). Ashley Hiraki earned all-tourney honors.

Mater Dei was idle for the week after winning the Iolani Classic in Hawaii. Juniors Brooke Demetre and Alyssa Frescas lead Mater Dei.
