espnW 25 Power Rankings: Week 8

How do you know for sure when you've found the one?

It's a riddle we spent the better part of a week pondering. Our conclusion? We're going to need a few more weeks to sort it all out.

Last Tuesday, Paul VI, which had been the top-ranked team all season long in the espnW 25 Power Rankings, suffered its first loss of the season, 68-52 to St. John's College. Bump up No. 2, you say? Centennial has a head-to-head loss to Paul VI in addition to a loss to Clovis West. Leapfrog the No. 3 team? That's Miami Country Day, which also has a loss to Clovis West. How about No. 4? You guessed it: Grandview has a loss to Miami Country Day. Surely Clovis West deserves it then, right? Well, Clovis West has a loss to both Centennial and Archbishop Mitty, which has losses to Grandview and St. John's, which has a loss to Clovis West. Which pretty much brings us full circle.

Thankfully, Paul VI and St. John's have a rematch scheduled for Feb. 12.

So, for Week 8, Paul VI stays put at No. 1, and St. John's soars up to No. 6. The rest stay in line. For now.
