espnW 25 Power Rankings: Final


The final act of the 2013-14 season played out in New York at the Dick's Sporting Goods National High School Tournament, and the results opened the door for a new team to makes its way into the final espnW 25 Power Rankings.

Chania Ray, a Florida State signee, led Riverdale Baptist to a 60-35 win over Fremont (Utah) in the final. Fremont beat Miami (Fla.) 44-33 in one semifinal and Riverdale Baptist edged Edgewater (Fla.) 59-58 in the other.

Miami's loss allowed La Vega (Texas) to take over the No. 25 spot. Led by Calveion Landrum, La Vega won the Texas 3A title on March 1 to cap an undefeated season.

While there was movement at the bottom of the rankings, there was no budging Blackman from the top. The Lady Blaze suffered a single loss, to No. 2 Incarnate Word, and later avenged it. Led by sophomores Crystal Dangerfield and Jazz Bond and juniors MeMe Jackson and Alex Johnson, Blackman could stay put for a while.

Incarnate Word concluded its stellar season on March 22 with its second straight state championship. IWA's lone loss was to No. 1 Blackman back in January. Senior point guard Nakiah Bell is off to Iowa State but Napheesa Collier returns.
3Long Beach Polytechnic (27-3)

Last Week: 3
Long Beach Poly concluded its season on March 29 by winning the CIF State tournament Open Division championship. Among the Jackrabbits' 27 victories are quality wins over No. 7 Mater Dei, No. 8 Regis Jesuit and No. 19 Etiwanda. McDonald's All American Lajahna Drummer is off to UCLA.
4Duncanville (35-1)
Duncanville, TX

Last Week: 4
Duncanville fell to No. 6 Manvel in the Texas state final on March 1, and its 105-game winning streak came to a close. McDonald's All American Ariel Atkins and teammate Tasia Foman are set to suit up for Texas next season.
5Windward (26-3)
Los Angeles, CA

Last Week: 5
Windward lost to No. 19 Etiwanda in the CIF State tournament Open Division regional semifinals on March 18. Windward counts two wins over No. 3 Long Beach Poly on its record. McDonald's All American Jordin Canada will take her game to UCLA and Kristen Simon is off to rival USC.
6Manvel (38-2)
Manvel, TX

Last Week: 6
Manvel beat No. 3 Duncanville in the state final on March 1 to avenge one of its two losses on the season. Gatorade national player of the year Brianna Turner is headed to Notre Dame.
7Mater Dei (25-3)
Santa Ana, CA

Last Week: 7
Mater Dei spent 10 weeks in the No. 1 spot but lost to No. 3 Long Beach Poly in the CIF State tournament Open Division regional semifinals on March 18. Katie Lou Samuelson returns next year for her senior season.
8Regis Jesuit (26-2)
Aurora, CO

Last Week: 8
Senoirs Justine Hall (Purdue), Diani Akigbogun (Texas), Anna Ptasinski (Lafayette), Jordan Molyneaux (Seton Hall), Neffie Lockley (Howard) and Kelsi Lidge (Drexel) will be tough to replace.
