Frozen Four: First period update

April, 9, 2009
WASHINGTON -- It was a scoreless first period between Bemidji State and Miami in the first national semifinal Thursday. Each team recorded 12 shots on goal and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Beavers goalie Matt Dalton had some big glove saves, including several on Grade A chances, and RedHawks goalie Cody Reichard made some big pad saves.

Play was a little sloppy at the beginning but it picked up -- especially the physical nature -- as the period went on. You can see why the Beavers have been a difficult team to play against late in the season. They have a relentless forecheck, and when their game is on, they do a good job of taking away time and space.

Apropos of nothing: This game has quite a United States versus Canada feel to it. Only one Miami player, sophomore left wing Justin Vaive (Toronto), hails from north of the border. Conversely, Bemidji's roster has nearly as many Canadians (10) as Americans (11) dressed this afternoon.
