Rice will turn to bullpen to preserve win

May, 29, 2009
HOUSTON -- Veteran Rice coach Wayne Graham will be turning over a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning against Sam Houston State to a beleaguered bullpen as the Owls try to nail down another regional victory.

The Owls' bullpen has been their biggest weakness as Graham has been unable to find a consistent closer. He'll try in the eighth with Mark Haynes, who will be looking for his first save of the season.

Rice extended its lead to 3-1 in the fifth by taking advantage of two Bearkat errors. Jimmy Comerota advanced on a two-out throwing error by Sam Houston shortstop Jon Reed. Comerota then advanced to third on Brock Holt's double and scored on a throwing error on the play by right fielder Tyler Knight.

Now, Graham will be chancing his hopes of advancing on his team's biggest weakness -- the bullpen. It will be interesting to see if the Owls can overcome the liability.
