OSU associate AD Bill Jones dies at 48

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State says one of its associate athletic directors has died of an apparent heart attack. Bill Jones was 48.

The university says the alumnus was in his 14th year working for the athletic department and died Tuesday at the University Medical Center.

Athletic director Gene Smith called the loss profound. He said Jones' "genuine enthusiasm, calm demeanor and lifelong love for the Buckeyes made him a valuable part of every project he touched."

Jones was named associate athletic director for external affairs in 2009. He previously held other department positions, including assistant athletic director for ticketing.

The Columbus native held a 1986 bachelor's degree from Ohio State and a 1991 master's degree from Ohio University.

His father, Jim Jones, was Ohio State athletic director from 1987 to 1994.
