Texas recruits still alive in playoffs

AUSTIN, Texas -- Thirteen of Texas' 19 commitments for the Class of 2012 are still alive in the playoffs. Here's a look at who is in the chase for a state title and who can turn their attention toward becoming a Longhorn:

RB Johnathan Gray (Aledo, Texas/Aledo)
Next game: Aledo (9-2) has a stiff test against Mansfield Summit (10-1) at 7:30 Friday night at Burleson Stadium. Gray rushed 26 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns and had five receptions for 73 yards and a score in a 59-10 win over Fort Worth Dunbar in bi-district play last week.
Gray has rushed 224 times for 2,628 yards and 50 touchdowns, and he has caught 21 passes for 465 yards and five scores this season.

DT Malcom Brown (Brenham, Texas/Brenham)
Next game: Brenham (11-0) faces Beaumont Ozen (6-5) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Thorne Stadium in Aldine. The Cubs defeated Humble Kingwood 35-3 last week.

WR Cayleb Jones (Austin, Texas/ Stephen F. Austin)
Season over: Austin High (2-9) lost to Leander 35-14 in the bi-district round of the playoffs last week. Jones finished with 11 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown and also threw a touchdown pass in the loss. He finished the season with 59 receptions for 1,025 yards and nine touchdowns, rushed 24 times for 124 yards and a score and threw two touchdowns on five pass attempts.

QB Connor Brewer (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral)
Next game: Chaparral (12-1) will play Peoria Centennial (11-1) on Friday in the third round of the playoffs. Brewer completed 8-of-12 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in a 51-7 victory over Gilbert Perry last week. He has completed 153-of-238 passes for 2,533 yards, 39 touchdowns and four interceptions this season.

WR Thomas Johnson (Dallas/Skyline)
Next game: Skyline (11-0) will play in one of the better second-round playoff games in the state when it faces DeSoto (10-1) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Irving Schools Stadium. Johnson caught six passes for 62 yards and scored twice in the Raiders' 31-0 win over McKinney Boyd last week.

OT Kennedy Estelle (Pearland, Texas/Dawson)
Next game: Dawson (9-2) plays Houston Reagan (7-4) at 7 tonight at Galena Park ISD Stadium. Estelle helped the Eagles record 409 yards of offense in last week's 41-34 overtime victory against Lamar Consolidated.

LB Peter Jinkens (Dallas/Skyline)
Next game: Skyline (11-0) will play in one of the better second-round playoff games in the state when it faces DeSoto (10-1) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Irving Schools Stadium. Jinkens recorded nine tackles in the Raiders' 31-0 win over McKinney Boyd last week.

CB Bryson Echols (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto)
Next game: The Eagles (10-1) have a huge test against Dallas Skyline (11-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Irving Schools Stadium. Texas has four commitments playing in this game. Echols had an interception and was 4-for-4 in PATs in DeSoto's 54-10 win over A&M Consolidated last week.

DT Alex Norman (Dallas/ Bishop Dunne)
Season over: Bishop Dunne (3-8) lost to Beaumont Kelly 42-0 last week in the first round of the TAPPS playoffs.

OG Curtis Riser (DeSoto, Texas/Skyline)
Next game: The Eagles (10-1) have a huge test against Dallas Skyline (11-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Irving Schools Stadium. Riser injured his knee in the regular season finale and did not play last week. His status is unknown for this week.

DT Paul Boyette (Humble, Texas/Humble)
Season over: Humble (4-6) did not make the playoffs.

ATH Orlando Thomas (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove)
Next game: Copperas Cove (10-1) faces Rowlett (7-4) at 9 p.m. Friday at Cowboys Stadium in bi-district play. Thomas was 8-of-15 for 139 yards a touchdown and two interceptions in Cove's 48-47 thriller over Mesquite Horn last week. He also rushed 17 times for 42 yards and a score.

LB Tim Cole (Brenham, Texas/Brenham)
Next game: Brenham (11-0) faces Beaumont Ozen (6-5) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Thorne Stadium in Aldine. The Cubs defeated Humble Kingwood 35-3 last week.

DE Caleb Bluiett (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook)
Season over: West Brook (6-5) lost to Deer Park 31-30 in bi-district play last week.

OT Camrhon Hughes (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights)
Season over: Harker Heights finished the season at 5-5.

LB Alex De La Torre (Denton, Texas/Ryan)
Next game: Ryan (11-0) will face El Paso Andress (8-3) at noon Saturday at Midland's Grande Communications Stadium. De La Torre recorded eight tackles and scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in Ryan's 43-21 victory over Amarillo Caprock in bi-district play last week.

DE Hassan Ridgeway (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield)
Next game: Mansfield (10-1) faces Denton Guyer (8-3) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in the second round of the playoffs. The Tigers defeated Grapevine 55-27 last week.

QB Jalen Overstreet (Tatum, Texas/Tatum)
Next game: Tatum (9-2) faces Cameron Yoe (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Palestine in the second round of the playoffs. Overstreet rushed 16 times for 134 yards and three touchdowns in Tatum's 50-13 stomping of Woodville last week.

K Nick Jordan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell)
Season over: Coppell finished the season at 6-4. Jordan was 23-for-23 on PATs and kicked field goals of 36, 41, 46 and 34 yards.
