The Big 12 also issued a public reprimand for Kansas players Joe Dineen, Dorance Armstrong Jr., Jeremiah Booker, and Daniel Wise for refusing to shake hands with Mayfield. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, in a statement: “The refusal of these student-athletes to shake an opponent's hand during the pre-game ceremony is contrary to tradition and inconsistent with common courtesy. The pre-game handshake among team captains is symbolic of good sportsmanship. This breach of protocol is not in keeping with the standards of the Big 12 Conference. I am grateful for the work of the Kansas administration and coaches to resolve this matter.”

KU players lose captaincy for snubbing Mayfield

Kansas coach David Beaty said that three Jayhawks who didn't shake the hand of Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield won't be captains for Saturday's game at Oklahoma State.

Over the phone, Kansas linebacker Joe Dineen called the ploy to not shake hands with OU QB Baker Mayfield before their game “a dumb impulse decision.” Said Dineen: “That's not how this game should be played. It won't happen from me or from this program again.” Beaty announced Tuesday that Dineen, defensive tackle Daniel Wise and defensive end Dorance Armstrong would not serve as captains Saturday against Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley called the handshake snub "a lightning rod" for how tensions escalated in the Kansas game.

David Beaty said he talked to OU coach Lincoln Riley over the weekend and apologized for the handshake snub.

Kansas coach David Beaty on the handshake snub: "We let them know it was unacceptable and will never happen again."

Kansas LB Joe Dineen, on the handshake snub: "It wasn't an attack on (Mayfield) personally at all. I respect him. He's obviously a great player. It was more for us personally to kind of put our foot down and kind of get a little bit fired up before the game and let them know that we're here and we're not going to just back down because you're Oklahoma."

Kansas coach David Beaty on his players snubbing Baker Mayfield at the coin toss: "I'm proud of our guys for getting to a point, and not just -- we're not going to take it anymore. You're going to stick your feet in the ground and you're going to defend your grass. I think we've got to display (it) better than that, obviously, but I get it. I understand where they're coming from. I've got to do a better job as their coach maybe teaching them how to manage that a little bit better. … But I certainly don't think it was anything more than the fact that this is a football game, and we're going to defend our grass. From that standpoint, I think it helped us. We were ready to go."

Kansas coach David Beaty, on the Baker Mayfield crotch grab: "I mean, I saw him, but he's a competitor. I mean, guys do what they do. I'm not sure exactly what took place. He's not my player. So, it's not my job to manage him. It's my job to get our guys to where they can -- they stop him where maybe a guy doesn't have that opportunity to do that. I don't control him. He's a terrific player. I know that. I'll tell you what, I haven't seen any better. That guy is a really, really good football player. I'm not sure what he said, but I know Coach (Lincoln) Riley is a classy guy. He'll manage it."
