Mississippi State didn't throw it much on Saturday night but even when they did, it was enough to hurt them. Nick Fitzgerald threw two first-quarter interceptions that eventually doomed the Dawgs against the elite LSU defense. Their defense and run game is good; they have to find a way to be effective in the air moving forward.

No. 5 LSU comes out with the win it needed (19-3 over Mississippi State) to keep its College Football Playoff hopes intact but suffered a loss in the process, as a fourth quarter targeting call on All-American LB Devin White means the Tigers will be without their defensive leader for the first half of their next game: Alabama.

LSU All-American linebacker Devin White will miss the first half of the Tigers' game against Alabama on Nov. 3 after he was called for targeting in the second half Saturday against Mississippi State.

Gut punch for LSU: All-American linebacker Devin White ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter vs. Mississippi State. The Tigers have this game in hand but their next game? Alabama. They'll be without their defensive leader in the first half vs. the Crimson Tide. Huge blow for the Tigers.

LSU ended the first half and started the second half better offensively. After seeing their first seven drives go for four plays or fewer, the Tigers' last two drives have gone for 10-plus plays, resulting in a pair of field goals and a 10-point early second half lead over Mississippi State.

LSU leads Mississippi State 10-3 at halftime despite having its second-lowest offensive output in a half all season (the Tigers had 79 yards; 78 yards in the second half vs. Southeastern Louisiana is their season-low). The Tigers intercepted Nick Fitzgerald twice, rendering the Bulldogs' passing game nonexistent.

It's not a good night for the forward pass in Baton Rouge. LSU QB Joe Burrow and Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald combined for three first quarter interceptions and have completed a combined 6-of-their-first 15 passes for 34 yards.
