Florida is going the young route and is hiring former Mississippi State graduate assistant Christian Robinson to coach its linebackers. Robinson, who is 27, played LB at Georgia with current Florida DC Todd Grantham serving as his DC. He also helped coach Mississippi State's LBs last year with Grantham as the DC. Robinson replaces Tim Skipper on staff. Robinson is considered by some to be a "rising star" in the profession. One SEC coach told me of Robinson: "In five years, everyone will be like 'Wow,'" when it comes to his coaching ability.

The first early signing period is in the books. With almost seven weeks until national signing day, some grades are incomplete, but here's how teams have fared.

Former Ohio State WR Trevon Grimes is transferring to Florida. The former 2017 ESPN 300 member played in two games as a freshman -- catching three passes for 20 yards -- before leaving the team and returning to his home in South Florida because of a family matter. Grimes is expected to apply for a family hardship waiver in order to play immediately in 2018.

New coaches earn mixed results in early signing period

Coaches who took over at new schools had a tough task getting rolling before the early signing period. Some, including Chip Kelly and Dan Mullen, have survived, while others have a lot of work to do to salvage their classes.

Florida lands dual-threat QB in Jones (3:45)

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

It's no surprise Dan Mullen's press conference focused almost exclusively on the signing of quarterback Emory Jones. He's as important a player Florida has signed in years. To flip him from Ohio State and hold off Florida State late says a lot about the work Mullen and staff did in a crunched window.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Florida coach Dan Mullen said he remains in favor of an early signing date even though he had a short window to sign players. "I like it. We were put in a tough situation this year but I do like having the opportunity to have an early signing period," Mullen said. "These guys knew they wanted to be Gators, why extend it out another six weeks? I'm in favor. I wouldn't have minded another week or two, but moving forward in the future there are benefits to having an early signing day."

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Florida coach Dan Mullen on the importance of holding off other schools to sign four-star quarterback Emory Jones, whom they flipped from Ohio State. "Those are the expectations here. That's maybe the first but certainly not the last. The guys we're going after, they're going to have a lot of different opportunities to go to great schools across America. We're going to be in a lot of those recruiting battles in the future."
