UMBC, Virginia and the night the impossible happened

Sure, it could happen. A No. 16 could beat a No. 1. But would it ever really, actually, truly happen? Yes, it finally did. No. 16 UMBC beat No. 1 Virginia in the most improbable, do-you-believe-that-just-happened upset in NCAA tournament history.

No. 16 UMBC stuns No. 1 Virginia 74-54 to make NCAA history

Senior guard Jairus Lyles scored 28 points, and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County pulled off the most shocking upset in NCAA Tournament history, defeating Virginia 75-54 on Friday night to become the first No. 16 seed ever to beat a No. 1 seed.

A lot of things to say after that Virginia stunner. After UMBC, Cincinnati should be the 2nd happiest team today. The Bearcats started the day as 5th most likely to win the National Championship and are now 2nd after Villanova per espn.com/bpi .

UMBC has done it, becoming the first 16-seed to upset a No. 1 in Virginia. The Retrievers closed as 20.5-point underdogs in Las Vegas sportbooks, making it the second-biggest upset by pointspread since 1985.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

History was made, but it's even more shocking than that. The impossible happened. No. 16 seed UMBC beat top overall seed Virginia, and it wasn't even close: 74-54. Before tonight, No. 16 seeds were 0-135 against No. 1 seeds. Now, you can make that 1-135. The Retrievers, amazingly and incredibly, stand alone.

UMBC is up to 99.8% chance to win. Just like the Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

Virginia trails by double digits and is scoring just 0.85 points per possession. Extended over an entire game, that would be the Cavaliers' worst performance of the entire season on offense.

Ben Fawkes ESPN Staff Writer

No. 1 Virginia is in serious jeopardy of being upset by UMBC, which closed as a 20.5-pt underdog. It would be the second-biggest upset by pointspread since 1985.
