Five trades we'd love to see at the winter meetings

A star slugger to the Cardinals? A coveted young ace to the Dodgers? With baseball's winter meetings just days away, we offer a handful of deals that make sense for all sides.

Spending $15 million over two years for Welington Castillo, a guy who should put up good power numbers in G-Rate Field, makes sense on the surface. But he's also been one of the worst pitch-framers in the game, ranking third-worst in MLB from 2014-2017 in Baseball Info Solutions' Strike Zone runs saved. Baseball Prospectus had consistently rated him among the worst until last season, when he presided over the Orioles' rotation implosion. Given the number of high-end pitching prospects that GM Rick Hahn has acquired, that $15 million could come with a risk to their development if Castillo's long-term struggles follow him to the South Side.

White Sox sign free-agent C Castillo for 2 years

Coming off a season in which he hit .282 with 20 homers for Baltimore, catcher Welington Castillo signed a two-year deal with the White Sox on Friday. The team also avoided arbitration with reliever Danny Farquhar.

Although the Red Sox believe Jose Abreu would fill their need for a middle-of-the-order slugger, the White Sox want "an arm and both legs," according to a rival talent evaluator. Chicago got Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech last year for Chris Sale, and Boston now lacks that level of talent in the mid/upper levels of its farm system. Jackie Bradley Jr.? The White Sox have liked him in the past, but he's controllable through only 2020, at which time their window to contend will just be opening.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

In any conversation about trade talks for Jose Abreu, it shouldn't be overlooked how much the Red Sox wanted him four years ago when they were outbid by less than $5 million by the White Sox. It's debatable whether the Red Sox have enough top prospects left to make a strong offer for the slugging Cuban first baseman, but if any team knows Boston's system, it's the White Sox after the Chris Sale trade last year.

One key move for the White Sox this offseason

While it's become more difficult to extend young stars to long-term deals, the White Sox might want to consider doing so with one of their prized talents.
