Hot stove stock watch: Marlins

The Marlins may be considered playoff hopefuls, but they would have to add sorely needed impact starting pitching, and doing so wouldn't necessarily improve the long-term prospectus.

One key move for the Marlins this offseason

If the Marlins are going to move the 2017 National League MVP this offseason, they may as well listen on several of their other top players.

Olney: The Giancarlo Stanton dilemma

Some evaluators walked away from their Giancarlo Stanton conversations with the Marlins believing that Miami probably still needs something of a reality check.

Baseball's hot stove season is here, so why hasn't anything happened yet?

All season we heard about lethargic pace of play on the field; now MLB's offseason is off to a slow start of its own. Here are the factors behind the quiet stretch, and when you can expect to see blockbuster deals and marquee free-agent signings heat up.

ESPN Stats and Information

What made Giancarlo Stanton great? He shored up a weakness. He had a .267 BA/.541 Slug pct vs outside pitches, a 34-point jump in BA and 100 points in slugging percentage from 2016.

ESPN Stats and Information

At 5-6, José Altuve shares the distinction as the shortest player to win a MVP award with Phil Rizzuto (1950) and Bobby Shantz (1952). At 6-6, Giancarlo Stanton becomes the tallest player in baseball history to win a MVP award.

Stanton: I understand 'business part' if traded

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, fresh off winning the NL MVP, said he preferred to stay in Miami but understood if the team's new ownership, led by Derek Jeter, would go in a different direction.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Giancarlo Stanton becomes the first Marlins MVP, beating out Joey Votto by just two points in the fourth-closest MVP vote in history. Both players received 10 first-place votes with Stanton and his 59 home runs edging out on-base machine Votto, 302 points to 300. Stanton becomes just the seventh MVP from a losing team. I'm a little surprised that the vote was so close and it shows the influence of modern metrics that two guys on non-playoff teams finished first and second in the voting.

Altuve, Stanton take home first MVP awards

Astros 2B Jose Altuve was a runaway choice for American League MVP, while Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton was named the National League MVP. Stanton beat Reds first baseman Joey Votto by 2 points in the fourth-closest vote in major league history.

We have our first-ever non-Cub MVP from a losing team in NL history, as Giancarlo Stanton takes home the trophy after he beat out Joey Votto by just two points in the BBWAA's voting.

Projecting MLB's award winners in 2018

While it's not clear where Giancarlo Stanton will be playing next season, you can bet on him being in the MVP race.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

There does not seem to be any plausible reason to strongly connect the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees, other than Derek Jeter had a few clutch moments in the Bronx. When you combine Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner desire to fall under the luxury tax this season with the Yankees' reluctance to trade top prospects, it doesn't make much sense to think Stanton will be in pinstripes. Stanton can make $295M over the next 10 years. He can also opt-out of the deal after 2020. If the Yankees want to spend big on super talented outfielder, they can wait until next offseason -- after they reset their tax -- and try to sign Bryce Harper. Now, if the Marlins just did a salary dump without receiving any big prospects, the chances go up slightly, but still not much.

Boras: Payroll slashing not good for MLB

Agent Scott Boras said teams that trade high-priced veterans for the sake of rebuilding and reducing payroll can affect competition in Major League Baseball.

Jeter: Not given Marlins will look to deal Stanton

New Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says Miami must make changes to stop losing money, but it's not a foregone conclusion that slugger Giancarlo Stanton will be traded.

Jerry Crasnick ESPN Senior Writer

Marlins owner Derek Jeter met with reporters today and said he's yet to speak with Giancarlo Stanton, who's been the subject of ongoing trade rumors.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Giancarlo Stanton has not expressed an unwillingness to accept a potential trade to Boston or St. Louis, according to a source familiar with the slugger's thinking.

Stanton, Votto could join unique group

If either Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton or Reds 1B Joey Votto takes home NL MVP honors Thursday, they would become just the third player to win the award on a losing team. (ESPN Stats & Info)
