Molina open to player-manager role in 2020

Catcher Yadier Molina, who has spent his entire 15-year career with the Cardinals, said it "would be a dream" to be considered for the role of player-manager during his last contract year with the team in 2020.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has been fired with his club at 47-46 and in danger of missing the postseason a third straight year, their worst stretch since missing the playoffs from 1997-1999. He leaves with a career .555 record, one NL pennant, and perhaps more than the usual second-guessing from fans. Also out, hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller.
