FPI gives K.C. the edge in Oakland

The Raiders need a win to pull out of their tailspin, but one might be tough to come by. They've lost five in a row and seven of eight to the Chiefs, who are favored by ESPN's FPI on the road.

Will the Silver and Black skid stop?

The Raiders have lost four straight games after starting the season 2-0. Only seven teams in the Super Bowl era have followed up a 2-0 start with a five-game losing streak. None of those seven teams recovered to make the playoffs. (ESPN Stats & Info)

FPI ranks best games of NFL Week 7: Chiefs at Raiders

The Chiefs have surpassed all expectations and have a firm grip on the AFC West. Even with a win, the Raiders' chances at winning the division would be slim.

Linebackers Cory James and Marquel Lee returned to a light practice on a short week Tuesday. But rookie cornerback Gareon Conley and right tackle Marshall Newhouse remained out. Look for Vadal Alexander at right tackle against the Chiefs, then, if Newhouse is out.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith is 9-1 against the Raiders in his career, completing 63 percent of his passes with a 19-4 TD-INT ratio and a Total QBR of 59. “Probably started when he married a Raiders cheerleader and it's been uphill from there for him," joked Chiefs coach Andy Reid in a conference call with Bay Area reporters.

The Raiders' chances of making the playoffs have fallen to 6 percent, per FPI, courtesy of their four-game losing streak. Their chances of qualifying for the postseason were 66 percent after the victory over the Jets that saw the Raiders improve their record to 2-0. Then again, that's why they play the games, no?

Derek Carr is 0-5 in his last 5 games against the Chiefs, completing 56 percent of his passes with a 4.9 yards per attempt, a 5-5 TD-INT ratio and a Total QBR of 23. His first career win, though, came against Kansas City. In Oakland. On a Thursday night. In the rain.

Rookie safety Obi Melifonwu has had his practice window opened for a potential return from Injured Reserve. The Raiders second-round draft pick had a purported knee injury in training camp and is eligible to play for the Raiders at Miami on Nov. 5. PK Sebastian Janikowski and OL Denver Kirkland are vying for the other spot to return from IR for the Raiders.

FPI: Silver and Black sliding off the grid

Oakland's preseason Super Bowl chatter is looking more and more like mythology. The Raiders' latest loss dropped their playoff chances in ESPN's FPI nearly 50 percentage points below where things stood back in August.

NaVorro Bowman (No. 53) seems to be having a good time during stretch with the Raiders on Tuesday. Bowman has some studying to do if he is to play Thursday night against the Chiefs.
