SMU hires father of top junior recruit Maxey

SMU has hired longtime Dallas area high school hoops coach Tyrone Maxey to its staff, continuing a trend of schools hiring the parents of high-level prospects. Tyrone is the father of junior Tyrese Maxey, ranked No. 27 in the ESPN 60 for the 2019 class.

The Cowboys announced a crowd of 8,261 for Wednesday's practice, bringing the three-day total of practices in Frisco to 21,868. The Cowboys will practice at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Jason Garrett won't commit to Ezekiel Elliott playing Saturday, but the running back took first-team snaps against the scout team in prep work for the Raiders. He didn't do that last week in getting ready for the Colts. If Elliot plays, it would be similar to last year when he received 14 snaps.

Kellen Moore with an impressive long-field fade to rookie receiver Noah Brown for a touchdown. He followed that up by overthrowing Lance Lenoir on a fade on the next play. Moore has taken more snaps with the No. 2 offense so far today.

Veteran linebacker Justin Durant is taking part in team drills for the first time in training camp. Since he signed close to the start of camp and didn't have the benefit of the offseason program, the Cowboys have been deliberate in their approach with him to avoid injury.

The Cowboys are without more than 20 percent of their roster with 19 of their 90 players not taking part in practices. Some are veteran off days, like Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, Darren McFadden, Orlando Scandrick, Cole Beasley and Tyron Smith. Others are management, like Jaylon Smith. The rest are dealing with injuries.

Former GM Klein dies at 75 after heart surgery

After serving as general manager of the Rangers, Indians and Tigers, Joe Klein spent two decades as executive director of the independent Atlantic League. He died Wednesday at 75 after complications from heart surgery.
