Garrett: Releasing Dez a 'challenging situation'

While Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday that he'll always love Dez Bryant as a player and a person, he said the decision to release Bryant was in the team's best interest. Bryant would have counted $16.5 million against the salary cap this season.

Cowboys captains Dak Prescott, Jason Witten and Sean Lee were asked about Dez Bryant's comments to NFL Network that “Garrett guys,” and captains played a part in the receiver's release on Tuesday. All three echoed roughly the same message. “All I know is that I loved playing with him and like anything any type of breakup can be tough,” Lee said. “But I know he's going to be dominant and play the way he can. We can't get into that (talk). We've got to move forward.”

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett made his first comments since the release of Dez Bryant last Friday at an event honoring Emmitt Smith and his wife, Pat, for their charity work. “Dez Bryant has been a great player for this franchise during his time here. Certainly a playmaker, a difference maker. A guy that we all love. Love him as a player, as a person and that will never change. It's a challenging situation. A lot of different factors go into these kinds of decisions and again the guide post for all of this is: What's in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys? And that's why we made this decision. Wish Dez nothing but the best going forward."

The Process will be heading to China next season as the Philadelphia 76ers will face the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA China Games 2018. The Mavericks and Sixers will meet twice on Oct. 5 in Shanghai and Oct. 8 in Shenzhen. This will be the first time the Mavericks and Sixers play in China. "When I played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I witnessed China's enthusiasm for basketball firsthand," Dallas Dirk Nowitzki said in a statement. "It will be a fantastic experience for our franchise to play in China for the first time. We're also excited about the possibility of reconnecting with two great Chinese players who played for the Mavericks, Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian."
