Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury gave an initial update on QB Patrick Mahomes' right shoulder/arm injury to the school's radio broadcast right after the win over Kansas: "We'll see. Sounds like he should be OK, but we've got to go get him checked out."

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury in postgame radio interview on injured QB Patrick Mahomes II: "Sounds like he could be OK, but we've got to get up there and check him out." Tech beat Kansas 55-19. The Red Raiders visit Kansas State a week from Saturday.

Updated Nic Shimonek stat line: 14 of 18 for 275 yards and four touchdowns. His passer rating is 279.4. That's two Tech quarterbacks tonight with four TD passes. Good night, Kansas.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Nic Shimonek is 11 of 14 for 190 yards and three scores in relief of Patrick Mahomes, who remains out after taking a shoulder hit late in the third quarter. No decline at all for Texas Tech, which leads 48-19. But make no mistake, this offense is built for Mahomes. Tech is a different team without him -- and the schedule grows more difficult from here. No word is yet available on the severity of the junior quarterback's injury.

Adding injury to insult, Kansas has knocked Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes II from the game. Mahomes was tackled hard after a 32-yard run. He has been taken to the locker room. Nic Shimonek is in for the Red Raiders. Tech leads 34-19.

Kansas defensive end Anthony Olobia is ejected for targeting against Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes. Big setback for the Jayhawks, who have played inspired defense after the first five minutes of this game.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

How about that KU defense? Texas Tech lost a bit of its offensive edge with a 14-0 lead, but credit the Jayhawks -- big hits and they're getting after Mahomes. The Jayhawks got three consecutive stops, including an interception by Fish Smithson and a safety on a botched punt. It's 14-2 in Lubbock.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Only 40 passing yards for Patrick Mahomes II on Texas Tech's second touchdown drive. That's got to be disappointing. In all seriousness, Tech is meeting almost no resistance from the Kansas secondary in the first quarter tonight. Mahomes hit 9 of 10 throws for 120 yards as the Red Raiders scored twice in the first five minutes.

Jason Witten had an interesting way to breakdown the fallout of the Dez Bryant situation from inside the Cowboys locker room, channeling his inner Jerry Jones: "Look, we all go through different things," Witten said. "That's handled within teams. Guys address it and move forward. It happens every week in the NFL from that standpoint. So, yeah, you always work together and talking and that's what teammates are, they're brothers. There's a great saying inside this building by somebody I tremendously respect – let's not circumcise a mosquito here, you know? I think that has great value in this. As things go on, move forward and we all understand that. This game means so much to Dez Bryant and that's a relationship that I've really enjoyed over the years in seeing that and the brotherhood that you have with that. Dez will be back out there in no time."

Mavs muscle watch: C/PF Dwight Powell tips the scales at a "fighting weight" of 245 now. He was a bit under 230 at the end of the season, bulked up to as high as 255 and slimmed down to a weight that allows him to maintain his energy and mobility with significantly more strength. (Powell, who signed a four-year, $37 million contract this summer, confirmed that he doesn't carry his wallet onto the scale.) "It's useful weight," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's not just weight to be heavier. It's muscle, it's basketball weight. It's combination of strength and a little bit more dynamic thrust. It's going to help him."
