Cowboys' non-QB MVP: Tyron Smith

There were plenty of options for Todd Archer to choose from, including Dez Bryant and Sean Lee. But Smith would be very hard to replace at left tackle, and keeping Tony Romo upright is awfully important. Non-QB MVPs

The Rangers' bullpen is ... confusing

Texas' relief corps ranks 27th in the majors with a 4.77 ERA but leads the majors with 30 wins. Must be all those late comebacks and one-run wins. What we learned Wednesday

Back-to-back: Desmond and ... Darvish?

Yes, Rangers starter Yu Darvish and outfielder Ian Desmond hit back-to-back home runs on Wednesday. The last AL team to do that was the then-Devil Rays on June 4, 2000, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Evaluating Texas' all-time success

Adam Rittenberg is 35 years old and has lived to see Texas win just one national title. He realizes the long-term history and tradition, but he gave the Longhorns a "9" for a lack of consistency while the sport has been most competitive. Tough calls in blue-blood rankings

Instead Bryant will be able to rest and recover at home. On Tuesday coach Jason Garrett said Bryant was doing much better a day after suffering a concussion in Monday's practice. The Cowboys' next practice is scheduled for Saturday.

Baylor DB Travon Blanchard is expected to miss the Bears' Sept. 2 opener against Northwestern State after undergoing minor knee surgery today. Blanchard is one of the team's best players and leaders on defense. Expect senior Patrick Levels to fill in for Blanchard in the hybrid "Bear" safety/linebacker role.
