Can Zeke keep it up?

Ezekiel Elliott's 48 carries last season put him in the top ranks of rookies over the last 15 years. The only player ahead of Elliott is the Cowboys' third-string running back, Alfred Morris.

Cowboys rookie cornerback Jourdan Lewis will arrive in California tonight now that his trial is over. He will work on the side Thursday and the Cowboys hope to give some work on Friday, which is the rest of the players off day. He could be in pads with the rest of his teammates as early as Saturday.

Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, Darren McFadden, Tyrone Crawford, Sean Lee and Orlando Scandrick will not practice today, according to coach Jason Garrett. He wants to get his veterans into a regular schedule throughout training camp in which they do not get worn out.

With a roster spot open following Lucky Whitehead's release, the Cowboys will work out wide receivers Corey Washington and Marvin Bracy. Washington has been with six teams in his career with five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Bracy, an Olympic sprinter, had a tryout earlier this year with Carolina. He left Florida State after the 2012 season. A groin injury kept Bracy from competing in the Summer Games in Brazil.

The Cowboys will hold a special teams only walkthrough this morning in Oxnard with the pads coming on for the first time this afternoon.

If Texas GM Jon Daniels decides to engage with Houston's Jeff Luhnow on Yu Darvish, he'll want to take a significant bite out of the Astros' farm system. Talks would likely focus on pitchers Franklin Perez and Forrest Whitley and outfielders Kyle Talker and Yordan Alvarez -- the four prospects that ESPN's Keith Law included in his midseason top 50. Rookie pitcher Francis Martes and outfielder Derek Fisher are also highly-regarded young players.

Gallo powers way to notable HR mark

Joey Gallo hit his 24th and 25th home runs of the year Wednesday. Gallo is just the second player in Rangers/Senators history age 23 or younger to hit at least 25 homers in a season prior to Aug. 1. Juan Gonzalez did so in back-to-back seasons, hitting 26 at 22 years old in 1992 and 30 at 23 years old in 1993. (Elias Sports Bureau)
