Carlisle said he will not update Butler's status until after he gets a look at him during Sunday morning's shootaround.
Butler participated in the Mavericks' shootaround Friday morning in Atlanta. Carlisle said he thought Butler would play against the Hawks while a guest on ESPN 103.3 FM's Galloway & Co. on Friday afternoon.
Instead, Butler missed his second consecutive game since having an adverse reaction to medication earlier in the week.
Butler appeared on TNT's "Inside the NBA" postgame show Thursday night in Atlanta and said the problem was stiffness in his knee. Butler missed a game Feb. 3 with the Washington because of a left knee contusion. It's not certain if the issue is related.
